aloha,

My name is JoAnna.

I am a spiritual counselor and soul-integration guide whose work lives at the threshold between psychology, spirituality, and ancestral ways of knowing.

My practice, The Liminal Approach, is rooted in Jungian psychology, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and Indigenous epistemologies. I support individuals in meeting and integrating unconscious aspects of the psyche—fears, desires, wounds, and hidden gifts such as creativity and insight—so they may move forward with greater vitality, alignment, and wholeness.

This work is grounded in compassion, curiosity, and reconnection: with one’s inner parts, ancestral lineages, and the deeper intelligence of the soul. Rather than bypassing difficulty, I invite a reverent relationship with what has been unseen or unheard, allowing integration to unfold organically.

Academic & Professional background

My academic path bridges Western psychological frameworks with Indigenous and transpersonal wisdom traditions.

  • B.A. in Women’s Studies with a focus on Indigenous Studies, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa

  • M.A. in East–West Psychology with Certification in Spiritual Counseling, California Institute of Integral Studies

  • Ph.D. Candidate in Philosophy with a concentration in East–West Psychology, CIIS

My current doctoral research explores an integrative framework weaving together Jungian shadow work, IFS voice-dialogue, and Indigenous shamanic journeying—three traditions that each engage the liminal: the fertile threshold between conscious and unconscious experience.

Lived practice

Beyond scholarship and counseling, my life is shaped by daily ritual, embodied practice, and relationship with the natural world. I find grounding through time in nature—travel, hiking, and swimming in the ocean—as well as through movement practices such as yoga, Pilates, and HIIT.

My personal spiritual practice draws from Tibetan Buddhist traditions (mindfulness meditation, mantra, visualization), breathwork, and Indigenous cyclical rituals that honor land, ancestors, lunar rhythms, and seasonal change. These practices are not theoretical to me—they are lived, embodied, and continually informing how I show up as a guide.

If you feel called to this shadow and soul work,I invite you to a complimentary 30-minute consultation, where we can connect, discuss your intentions, and sense if our journey together feels aligned.
